Diarrhoea and its Causes

Diarrhoea is a medical condition characterized by frequent watery bowel movements. The condition is uncomfortable usually accompanied by cold sweats, fever, and even muscle fatigue. Death can result from diarrhoea and often claims the young and elderly especially in nations where the quality of water is questionable and food sources are not as abundant in other more modernized areas of the world. Travellers should always use caution when travelling abroad and be mindful of any water advisories.

Causes of Diarrhoea

Common causes of diarrhoea range from unsafe water to improperly prepared food and even side effects from certain medication. While diarrhoea can appear almost suddenly it is often the result of contact with unseen forces.

Viruses have been known to cause diarrhoea. This virus is the same that causes herpes and spreads easily. Those that are sick or feel the onset of diarrhoea symptoms should be diligent in washing their hands to avoid passing on the disease.

Bacteria are another cause. Those that suffer from the condition after consuming untreated water or food that was not handled properly most likely have diarrhoea caused by a bacterial infection. 

Other causes of diarrhoea include:

• Food poisoning
• Infection
• Poor Diet
• Side effects from medication
• Excess coffee or alcohol

It takes many people by surprise that an item like Nicorette is the source of diarrhoea. It is important to consult with your physician about any possible side effects of medication and treatments before starting the treatment. Diarrhoea can be caused by taking a popular medication or even herbal treatments which is why speaking with your doctor is so important.

Treatment

The most common treatment method for those suffering diarrhoea is to simply let it pass. Of course, infants, young children, and the elderly should seek immediate attention should the diarrhoea become chronic or severe. There are several over the counter medicine designed to ease the symptoms of diarrhoea that have been proven effective. 

Remember to drink plenty of fluids and it is advised that milk should be avoided for a few days after the diarrhoea passes. While diarrhoea may not appear a serious issue if it goes untreated the condition can become problematic and even dangerous.
